Overthinking often feels like too much thinking. InsideISS looks at it slightly differently. The problem is not necessarily the amount of thought. The problem is that the system has entered a loop in which thinking no longer produces new information. The Secretary keeps returning to the same question because the School has not yet found enough certainty to close it.
Overthinking is often an attempt to think your way into safety.
A recognizable moment
You leave the conversation, but the conversation does not leave you. In the shower, on the bus and while trying to read, the Secretary tests new versions of what you should have said. The repetition promises certainty, yet no new evidence has entered the School.
What may be happening
Something creates uncertainty. The Secretary begins searching for an explanation. Different possibilities appear. Security notices that the situation is unresolved. The system becomes more alert. That alertness makes the issue feel even more important. The Secretary responds by thinking more. The loop continues. The mind may feel as if it is solving a problem. But sometimes it is only circling it.
Why stopping the thought can be difficult
A thought that feels important is difficult to ignore. And once Security becomes involved, the system may treat the question as unfinished business. What if I missed something? What if I make the wrong decision? What if this feeling means something? The Secretary returns to the same sticky note because the system has marked it as relevant.
Trying to force the thought away can sometimes make it even more noticeable.

Thinking versus movement+
Useful thinking changes something. You learn. You decide. You act. You discover new information. Overthinking often repeats without movement. A useful question is therefore not: Am I thinking too much? but: Is this thought producing new information or only repeating the same uncertainty?
What can help+
Sometimes the next step is more information. Sometimes it is a decision. Sometimes nothing can be solved yet. And sometimes the system needs regulation more than another explanation. Separating signal from story can help. So can writing the thought down, checking what is known, noticing what is predicted and allowing an unanswered question to remain unanswered for a while.
The Principal does not need to solve every sticky note immediately.
One sentence summary
Overthinking is not always a thinking problem. Sometimes it is an uncertainty loop asking the mind to create safety.
