Thoughts can feel surprisingly solid. A sentence appears in the mind and, for a moment, it can carry the weight of reality. This will go badly. They do not like me. Something is wrong. I cannot handle this. InsideISS uses a simple metaphor for thoughts: sticky notes. The Secretary writes them constantly. Some contain reminders.
Some contain memories. Some contain ideas. Some contain warnings. Some are predictions. And some are simply the mind testing possibilities. The mistake is not having the sticky note. The mistake is forgetting that it is a note.
A recognizable moment
Before sharing your work, the note They will see that I am not good enough appears. You do not have to tear it down or obey it. You can notice who wrote it, check the evidence and still press send.
Why thoughts feel convincing
The Mind is not producing random noise. It uses memory, experience, emotion, body state and the current environment. That means many thoughts contain useful information. But useful information is not the same thing as certainty. If Security is highly activated, threatening explanations may become easier to generate. If the system is exhausted, neutral situations may look more difficult.
If an old experience is active, the present can begin to resemble the past. The thought feels convincing because it came from the system. That still does not make it automatically true.
The Principal does not tear down every note
InsideISS is not about replacing every negative thought with a positive one. That would simply be another sticky note. The Principal reads. Pauses. Checks. Some notes require action. Some deserve investigation. Some can remain on the wall for a while. And some can eventually be thrown away. The important change is not controlling every thought.
It is remembering who is reading the note.
A thought can be real without being true
The experience of thinking is real. The fear produced by a thought can be real. The body response can be real. But the prediction inside the thought may still be wrong. This distinction allows two things to exist at once: I really feel this. and I do not yet know what it means. That is not denial. It is better information.
When the School is under load
Sticky notes tend to multiply when the School is busy. Less sleep. More stress. Conflict. Illness. Too many decisions. Uncertainty. Security becomes more alert, the Secretary receives more signals and the mental walls can begin to fill. At that point, trying to analyze every note may create even more notes. Sometimes the useful intervention is not another thought.
It is reducing the load on the School.
From note to choice
The simplest ISS practice is this: Notice the thought. Name it as a thought. Ask what produced it. Check what is known. Then let the Principal decide whether anything needs to happen. The Secretary still gets to speak. She just does not automatically get the final vote.
One sentence summary
A thought is something your system produced. That makes it worth noticing — not automatically believing.
