People pleasing

“I keep saying yes even when I mean no.”

People pleasing can look like kindness from the outside while feeling like pressure inside the School. The issue is not helping other people. The issue appears when connection feels dependent on keeping other Schools comfortable.

Sometimes saying yes is generosity. Sometimes it is protection.

A recognizable moment

You say yes to helping, then feel resistance almost immediately. Connection received short-term relief from possible disappointment, while ENERGY and PURPOSE now carry the cost of an agreement made too quickly.

Through the ISS lens

A Student may fear rejection. Security may treat disagreement as a social threat. The Secretary may predict: If I say no, they will be disappointed. If they are disappointed, the relationship may change. The Principal sees the immediate cost of a boundary. Saying yes reduces that threat quickly. Relief follows. Security learns: Keeping them happy worked.

The strategy becomes easier to repeat.

Why the pattern can persist

People pleasing often works in the short term. Conflict is avoided. Approval is preserved. The other person may be happy. But the School carries the hidden cost. Time. Energy. Resentment. Loss of direction. Unclear boundaries. The problem is therefore not that the strategy never works. It is that the School may use it even when the price is too high.

What can help

Notice the moment before the automatic yes. What is being predicted? What boundary is actually needed? What responsibility belongs to this School and what belongs to the other person? A boundary does not guarantee that nobody will be disappointed. The Principal cannot control the other School's reaction. Self-leadership means choosing whether the relationship can tolerate honest information.
