Motivation is the energy and direction that help the School move toward action, reward, meaning or a goal.
Inside the School
Motivation changes with novelty, sleep, emotion, stress, reward, confidence and capacity. It is therefore not a reliable measure of how much something matters.
In everyday life
You care about a project and still cannot begin after a draining week. Meaning is present, but available capacity and task clarity are not.
On another day, five minutes of setup creates movement. The task becomes more concrete, progress produces information and motivation follows action instead of preceding it.
System connections under load
Motivation links ENERGY with PURPOSE, emotion and prediction. Threat, exhaustion or an oversized goal can block movement even when values are clear. A different direction may reduce the first step, add support, restore capacity or reconsider whether the task still matters.
Important nuance
Purpose can sometimes guide action when motivation is low, while Energy reminds the Principal not to confuse values with unlimited capacity. Connected paths: The Principal · Purpose · The Furnace · Feeling Stuck
Motivation is a changing state, not a verdict on commitment or character.
