Emotional regulation is the system's ability to stay in contact with emotion while adjusting intensity, attention and action to the situation.
Inside the School
Regulation may involve the Body, Security, Connection, meaning and time. It does not mean forcing every Student to become calm.
In everyday life
An ambiguous message activates you before dinner. Instead of answering immediately, you eat, walk around the block and read it again with more capacity. The issue remains, but the available responses have changed.
At another time, regulation means becoming more active: opening the curtains, calling someone or moving when the School feels flat and distant.
System connections under load
Emotional regulation is coordination across EMOTIONS, BODY and ENERGY, not permanent calm. Load can make the range of available states narrower. A different direction may come from changing intensity, context or support enough for the Principal to return to the decision.
Important nuance
Sometimes regulation reduces intensity. Sometimes it makes enough safety for an emotion that was shut down to finally become noticeable. Connected paths: The Students · The Principal · Security Department · Regulation Loop
Regulation means flexibility with emotion, not permanent emotional quiet.
